Location
This image was taken at my Sisters home when my Niece and her 2 year old daughter Lily were down for a visit.Time
It was taken in the early afternoon, the sky was cloudy but quite light - not dark thunder cloudsLighting
This image was taken using natural light. I was sat on the floor with my back against a window which had a net curtain. It gave off a very soft diffused light. As Lily was running around she would come right up to the window to look out. I was taking shots of her playing, getting her used to me on the floor with my camera. She ran up to the window and stared out for a few seconds - I very gently called her name and she turned and looked straight at me, no smile and I took this shot - 1 shot. It is my favourite image as it is so natural, no posing, no silly smile - just Lily with that wonderful diffused light.Equipment
This was shot with my Canon 5D Mark III, EOS 24 - 105 F4 IS USM Lens, no other equipmentInspiration
I love to take portraits but try to avoid posed subjects. Lily was very aware of my camera and for months I was trying to get a natural looking shot of this beautiful child. I knew I had to be patient and get her used to me and my camera and it paid offEditing
There was not too much post-processing, Converted to B&W, adjusted the contrast to get the more depth, softened the image using the noise settings and sharpened the eyes. Her mouth was covered in chocolate so I took off as much as I could without spoiling the image with the healing tool in LR.In my camera bag
Always my Canon 24 - 105 all purpose Lens - a winner for all types of shot and depending on what I think I am going to shoot, my 100mm Macro and 50mm for portraits. Always spare batteries, memory cards, Polarising Filters, tissues, plasters and headache tablets!Feedback
Have patience if you are dealing with a subject who is not open to suggestion. When using natural light soften it using reflectors or net curtains so you don't get the harsh bright white that is impossible to soften in post-processing. Set your camera for the conditions especially with a moving object and let them come to you.
