This is one of my favorite hang outs, Dr. Bill Ralston Native Butterfly House at the Springfield Botanical Center in Springfield Missouri .I'm always thinking the next shot will be the best. All butterflies are native to Missouri.Time
The butterfly house does not open until after 10 a.m. is it is attended to by volunteers. I usually shoot there between 11:00 and 3:00Lighting
The butterfly house is in canopy hut, so the light is usually diffused somewhat.Equipment
I shoot with a Canon 5D MKIII, the butterflies usually are real active, most of the time, my lens of choice is my Tamron 70-200 f2.8 lens. Sometimes I will use a flash, regular speed flash. I would like to try using a good quality ring flash, but I don't have a good one. I have a cheap one but haven't used it yet. The flash will bring out much more detail.Inspiration
Just always trying to get the unusual butterfly image. Most judges are biased with butterfly images, because most are always similar, so go for the unusual.Editing
I usually don't do a lot of post-processing, my work flow starts out in Lightroom then I finish in photo shop. I usually bump up saturation some and correct exposure. In my camera bag
I don't have many top quality lenses. I use the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 old version. I carry a Canon 50mm f2.5 macro lens, a wide angle lens Canon 17-40 mm L and a few older Canon EF lenses.Feedback
I've learned that for the sharpest image set your shutter speed to at least 500, then decide how creative you want to get with the f stop, for sharp choose at least f7-16.I like to use f5.6 with the 70-200 Tamron lens as it gives great bokeh, but bokeh is good at higher f stops also.
