Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Xlendi, Malta. We had been dining with family and had not brought my camera along. I decided to use the phone as i may not get a second chance. Reason being the whole area is being built up as a tourist complex and these old shacks may be demolished any day.

Time

I shot this in the early afternoon. This is down a narrow alley behind cliffs so relatively in the shade.

Lighting

The eye catching colours are all up to the creativity of the fishermen as I did not manipulate or enhance the colours in post. If you are familiar with the traditional Maltese lizzy you will know that these boats are painted in vivid colours. I think the fishermen had paint left which they did not want to go to waste.

Equipment

Just my samsung phone.

Inspiration

The vivid colours and traditional fishing paraphernalia. I felt the urge to keep a record of the character of the place before it is turned into yet another block of flats.

Editing

Some minor cropping and sharpening but nothing else.

In my camera bag

These days I carry my faithful fz300 and an S5 which I am still experimenting with.

Feedback

Try and always keep a camera handy. In Malta it is sunny most days so for me a superzoom works well as I dislike switching lenses. Over the years I learnt that cameras are only a small part of the equation. Knowing how to use your gear to best effect and waiting for the best lighting conditions can help you achieve great results.
