The islet of Rosto de Cão is located on the south coast of the island of São Miguel, close to the city of Ponta Delgada.

This islet presents itself as a small and narrow peninsula of relatively litified palagonitic material, which extends about 80 meters from the coast to the sea, reaching a maximum height of about 35 meters.

The islet consists of the very dismantled remains of a small coastal cone, formed less than a hundred meters from the coast, which was joined by the accumulation of eruptive materials (in a process similar to that of the Capelinhos volcano, although much smaller) dimension).

The volcano is installed in the fault that leaves Pico do Boi and goes to Rosto de Cão, marking the place where she dives into the sea.

Next to the islet, the Mirhouro do Ilhéu de São Roque is built, a viewpoint that allows an interesting view of the south coast of the island in the region that extends from Ponta Delgada to beyond the city of Lagoa. Once there was a small fortress in the vicinity.
