this photo was taken on the Napali Coast on the island of Kauai, Hawaii I am a self taught photographer and it was my first photography trip in an helicopter we had the doors off on the helicopter, it was an amazing and terrifying moment as I am scared to death of heights it was taken in early March 2019, so the weather was really moody as it is still "hoolio" (winter) there At that time, the beauty of the Napali Coast was accessible only via boat or helicopter. Sadly, the Kalalau trail and the adjoining Ke’e State Beach in Ha’ena State Park remain shut down after Spring 2018 floods when the ensuing mudslides and damage wrought havocTime
this photo was taken at 5.40pm in between tears of hapiness to witness so much beauty and an irregular heart beat due to the scary flying doors off experienceLighting
I chose to do a trip late afternoon to avoid the midday lightning and maybe have the opportunity to go through all kind of weathers as in winter, there's tons of rain showers all day long. that's how I was lucky to capture that rainbowEquipment
this was shot RAW on a Canon 800D (Rebel T7i) with an EF24-105mm at exactly 24mm f/4.0 ISO160 and 1/2000sInspiration
we were going along the coastline, so opportunities to take picture of the coastline were small, depending on what the pilot was doing. I jumped on the opportunity to take this shot when the pilot made a turn it lasted 3 seconds, but the universe aligned for me at that exact moment with an amazing scenery and a rainbow to add magic to itEditing
I didn't do much post processing on this photo, I had to reduce the highlights and dehaze just a little bit to get a moody landscape with the clouds in the background I didn't touch the colors, saturation or hues I had to crop it to get the horizon straight of course, and a good compostion as it is difficult to take a straight photo in a moving "vehicule"In my camera bag
I do have an amazing photography backpack that makes wandering around with all my gear so easy ! the 31L provoke pack from WANDRD - if anybody is looking for a functional & stylish photography backpack it is the one I always have a 24mm f/2.8 pancake lens, really cool for landscapes and astrophotography and really light also I also have a 18-135mm f/4, and a DJI drone, the mavic air and of course my Canon 800D (Rebel T7i)Feedback
my advice would be to just go shoot I decided to go on a helicopter trip as it was the only way to witness the Napali coast at that time because of floodings the year before that damaged the trail But yes, wake up, and just go shoot. you'll never get special shots you love if you don't get out of your confort zone (like me and my fear of heights) or if you don't go out and explore to get the best out of your adventures some days will require patience, some will be extremely quick depending on what you're trying to shoot depending of the results you want to get, plan a bit ahead of time. will you need extra gear as a tripod for example ? or what settings will you need (roughly) to avoid loosing time and maybe the shot you're trying to immortalize And have fun !
