Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the 2017 British Gymnastics Championships in the Echo Arena in Liverpool. I with 2 other members of the camera club of which we are members surprisingly got accreditation for the event. We had to draw lots to see who would go to the event & I was lucky with the draw. We are all amateurs at our club & needless to say the professionals in general were not pleased with our presence.

Time

It was at 9.40 am when I got this shot & over the full day this is still the best image. You only need one good one but expect a lot more.

Lighting

I am self taught & only took up photography in 2007 at the age of 61 so this was a lot of guesswork & luck. I know very little about camera settings still today.

Equipment

My camera was a Canon 70D with a 28-135 lens (2nd hand). ISO12,800, f5.6 & 1/2000 sec I got all this info from my file in Photoshop. I used the camera Hand Held

Inspiration

We have a few members (6) within the club who are interested in Sports Photography. The group are very keen to share information so that we may all improve. I consider myself bottom of the group.

Editing

I am very much into Photoshop as I always have to sharpen my images. To make the image stand out I cut the gymnast & the beam out with a mask. That way I was able to turn the distracting background greyscale.

In my camera bag

I normally carry a Canon 7D (2nd hand) & 70D but I prefer the 70D with a 100-400 lens (2nd hand), 28-135 lens (2nd hand), 50mm lens, 17-55 lens, 10-22 lens. I always have plenty of memory cards & batteries & I sometimes carry a Manfrotto monopod.
