This Was Shot With a Really Simple Speed Light. I Bounced The Light Off the Wall So the Light Would Whiten The Mask. I Shot @1/15 Because I Wanter to Blow. I Didn't Want You to Be Able To Tell I Lit it. I Carry Three Speedlights, A Bare Tube, A Ringlight, and Studio Strobes. Each Is Designed to Do Something Different. I Never Know How I'm Going to Light a Scene Until I Get There and See the Model and Wardrobe. I Usually Shoot ISO 100 But It depends On How Much Depth of Field I Want and Whether I'm Shooting Wide Open or Not. I Just Bought a Variable Nuetral Density Filter to Increase My Options.Equipment
I Always Carry Nikons. I Shoot With a Nikon D800 as My Prime Camera. I Have a Nikon F4 and a Nikon FE2 I Always Shoot on Manuel. All my strobes are Set to Give Me F8. My Main Prime Lens Is a Nikkor 24-85. I Like it Because It has a Macro Feature. Generally, I Shoot Eyes, Lips, and Hands.Inspiration
This Was a 2 Model Shoot. I Was Shooting Samples For My Model Pages. I Also Needed Boudior Samples. I Have My Own Props Because Most Models Don't Have Jewelry or Good Wardrobe. Besides as a Photographer, YOU CONTROL THE SHOOT. If You Give That Responsibility Away YOU DON't Get Pictures. I'm Pretty Easy to Shoot With Because I Know People. I Also Shoot Quick as to Not Give My Models a Chance to Think. There Are other Tricks I Use To Get The Expressions.Editing
This Didn't Require Much. It Looked Better as a Really Flat Black and White. I Start Out in Lightroom. I Do a Basic Edit. Then I Run The Keepers Through My Preset Library. Next, It Goes to Photoshop For Burning and Dodging. I Use Texture, Clarity, and Dehazing On Almost Every Image. I Would Rather it Look Like Fantasy Art. I Tell People " This isn't Going To look Like You Think It Will. "In my camera bag
I'm Used to Carrying Three Cameras. It Comes From My News Photog Days. Each Camera Does Something Different. When I See a New Possibility I Change Cameras. Photoshop & Lightroom Interpret Scans Different From Raw Files. So it's Never The Same. I Test Various Film Emulsions Too. Because We Live in a Digital Age, There Are Infinite Possibilities For Each Photo. There Are Probably 10 Different Variations of This Photo.Feedback
One Thing I Have Noticed About New Photographers Is They Don't See the Big Picture. Look at the Light. How Are You Going to Change it? A Perfect Exposure May Not Be The Answer. You May Want a Bracket. You may Want Strobes. You May Want Hypersynch, Modifiers. Do You Understand How Lenses Compress Things? Do you Know About Depth of Field. I Know a Lot of Newbies Who Shoot Wide Open. Do You Know Fstops & Shutter Speeds? Lots of People Don't. Speaking of Shotter Speeds I Have Been Shooting @ !/15th Hand Held For Years. I Play With Motion All The Time. Unless You're Shooting Commercially Everything Does Not Have to Be In Focus. The other Thing To Look @ is Graphics. How Do the Lines Work? Everything In the World Has a Perfect and Specific Design. That's Why Some Pictures Are Iconic and Some Are Not. When I Arrive On Scene I Don't Take Cameras Out of The Bag Until I Have Analized The Scene. I Also Talk to My Subject. I Watch Eyes & Lips. I Want To See How Their Face Works. There Are Tricks to Manipulating a Person's Face. Most of the Time they Don't Even Realize it. I Tell People. "I'm Going to Tell you to Do Things that Make No Sense, But They Make Great Pictures. Most great pictures Don't Happen In The Physical Relm But in the Spirit.
