With sunrise now just after 5am, travelling any distance to a location requires a lot of energy and motivation - two things I'm short on after a week at work!
I went to bed with a vague idea of heading to the north coast or Bodmin Moor. My alarm went off at 3am - getting up at that time without a clear plan was never going to happen!
So instead, I reset my alarm for 4.30 and drove 5 minutes down the road to Mylor Yacht Harbour.
I had seen some impressive photos in the past by local photographers such as Chris Fletcher Photography and Hudson Swan, but I've never made the effort myself - even though it's on my doorstep!
With the rising sun side-lighting the clouds in a golden glow, I picked a composition similar to one that Chris had taken. Having not studied his shot closely, I opted to walk down the slipway to a point where the sides were clear of banners. A focal length of 35mm helped to give some presence to the sky.
Upon returning home, I studied Chris's photo more intently. I really liked his purplish colour grading. Also, standing further back with his super wide angle focal length seemed to de-clutter the scene. And the banner attached to the railings doesn't bother me at all!
