Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the Lemoenkop Reserve above Hermanus in the Western Cape. My brother and his family stays next to the Botanical Gardens and part there of is routes which one could use to walk and enjoy the view from the sea from much higher up. You could see nearly all of the town and on a cloudless day even as far as Gansbaai. Hermanus is known for whale watching and maybe one day I could be as fortunate to enjoy this as well. I took all the kids - my own two and two of my brother for a walk at Lemoenkop. Its safe and the view is very beautiful. Should rather say breathtaking! Western Cape proteas and Kaapse Fynbos is known world wide! it was just beautiful to see the sea at the back. Made my day to see the outcome.

Time

Cant really remember the time of day as we were walking each day at different times to enjoy the view. It was during January 2015 during one of our family holidays in the area. I do however wish to remind new photographers that early morning or late afternoon delivers most beautifil photos.

Lighting

The background was actually what was taking my mind most. I loved the depht of field as there was actaully a extreme depth due to no other things hindering the photo.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D 90 and due to the terrain could not take tripod along as it is sometimes a little uneven to walk. Only me and my camera. I do however know that photos taken with a tripod is exceptional! Blur prevented. I am however kind of a "wild photographer" as i literally goes nowhere without my camera. I did however lost my D90 due to an armed robbery on the beach in KZN one January afternoon whilst me and my kids were enjoying our last day at the beach before we had to return home. It was an extremely scary event and never had I experienced so much anger and and such a murderous look in the eyes of another human being. I had to beg them just to leave us and take all they wanted. this was traumatic and unfortunately it took me some months to replace due to no insurance on my equipment.

Inspiration

Due to the fact that I go no where without my camera i kind of see pictures in everything I see. I am taking photos as a hobby and hope to one day make a living from it. I take photos as I live in the moment when i have my camera in hand. I think photography is one of the most therapeutic forms of living any human being could experience. I had experienced quite a lot of trauma in my short life on earth and when walking wiht my camera in hand I forget the past and live in the moment. I can breathe and appreciate God and his fullness when I am in nature or taking photos of children laughing and playing. I prefer photos of nature and its beauty. Landscapes, animals in the wild or just beautiful flora in nature. Its magical to get home after a day outside and have a look back at what I experienced that day. I can then relive everything in months to come.

Editing

I am not a very post-processing type of photographer. I only started learning photoshop in 2020 during lock down and mostly for portraits of my son and daughter after their matric farewell's. I had however seen the exceptional difference a little editing can do on ordinary photos. I little birds had now both left the nest and this year (2021) is my year to enhance my computer skills in so far as Graphic design and Adobe goes. I love how portraits can make one photo ten completely different one's when you start to play with Black and white or something even more artistic. I do suggest every photographer make time to enhance their skills as it is a marvelous experience to make those memories last for ever.

In my camera bag

I am a wild at heart photographer. Even though now a days I do try to take photos with tripods or other support normally it's me and my camera. I prefer a 300 mm lens but hope to one day have one of those big boys where I can see the fleas on the Hadeda on the next door neighbour's roof. I am a single mom and therefor don't have a lot to spend on gear but i can sit at a single waterhole in Kruger for a whole day in my own company or just in my own back yard to enjoy local birds. You actually need very little equipment to start with.. Just as long as you start as soon as you possibly can! UV Filters are important since discovering them and know your camera and the enhancements it can bring to your photos! ( I always carry water along) I normally bring along my most valuable and that is time as I am never in a hurry when my camera is in hand!

Feedback

I would advice no copying of others. Look through your lens and capture everything you see that attracts your mind. Shoot anything that you find beauty in. Focus well. Keep as still as possible. (dont breath should it be possible) and ENJOY! Love photography as it bring you in contact with beauty. Being it portraits or nature. Being it suttle nudes or breathtaking brides. Enjoy it - it shows in your photos! Enjoy being in the moment and mostly enjoy the fortune of being in the presence of beauty! God made it. God made the day for you to enjoy and he made the universe for us to note Him in all His Mighty presence! I prefer to praise God for the beauty He made when I take note of the fortune of being in His presence with my Nikon! Thank you for appreciating this beauty with me!
