Location
I took this photo in the comfort of my living room during the country shut down caused by COVID-19.Time
I shot this later at night when it was dark outside so there was no outside light coming in.Lighting
I wanted to make this image look dramatic and show that the woman is a competitor. I used two independent soft box lights on either side of the woman.Equipment
I shot with the Canon 1dx Mark II without flash or a tripod. I used the two soft box lights and a grey paper backdrop.Inspiration
I wanted to capture competitors who are unable to compete due to COVID-19 cancellations and closures. The dedication, competitiveness, and passion seems to be wasted without any competition. However, they are resting mentally and still training, waiting for their moment again. This photo captures unwavering perseverance and strength of athletes around the world unable to do what they were born to do. They will be back, and it will be great.Editing
I did minimal level corrections, but otherwise it’s straight out of the camera. In my camera bag
I carry a Canon 1dx Mark II with a Canon EF 70-200 2.8L IS II USM and Canon EF 24-70MM F/2.8L II USM. These two lenses seem to do exactly what I need with action and portraits of all kinds.Feedback
It is a pretty simple yet effective technique to place the lights next to or even behind a subject. It outlines the subject while creating a dramatic appeal. It can be done with many cameras and doesn’t need a fancy lens. Use the space you have in your house and create a little studio!
