In the Ottoman Empire at the latest, crescent moon were associated with the Muslim world. According to a legend, Osman I, the founder of the Ottoman Empire, saw in the dream the crescent moon that extended from one end of the earth to the other. Taking this as a good omen, he decided to adopt the crescent moon as a symbol of his dynasty.
