Behind The Lens

Location

I snapped this shot while visiting my family last year while on furlough from my full time job as a dolphin trainer. These guys were out for our lunch and cruising around searching for scraps. I’ve always enjoyed photographing nature and capturing it’s true beauty.

Time

I love this shot because it was taken during a dark and stressful time. It really puts perspective on the saying “there’s always light at the end of the tunnel”. Taken on a beautiful day with 70 degree weather while the sun was high and bright.

Lighting

I’ve always been more of a natural light photographer. There is a distinctive challenge with getting natural light to work with you and for you, not having the ability to change it yourself. It forces you to move yourself around your subject and get creative.

Equipment

For this shot I used a Sony A7iii with the 50mm prime. All natural lighting and hand held.

Inspiration

Well the inspiration for this photo was pretty spontaneous. I was photographing my niece when I noticed the birds in flight right above my head. Never thought it would turn out so perfect. Lucky shot I guess.

Editing

Even though this photo was pretty awesome right out of camera I did soften the light a bit by raising the shadows and lowing the highlights. I also added sun flare so you can tell which direction the light is coming from.

In my camera bag

Canon used to be my camera of choice but I’ve recently switched to Sony. My favorite lens would be my Loawa 100mm macro but since you can shoot everything with a macro I carry my 50mm 1.8 around with me 100% of the time.

Feedback

Always carry your camera!! You never know when the opportunity will come along for the most perfect shot!
