Location
This photo was taken on the Festival City side of Dubai Business Bays a few weeks ago The bridge is the Business Bay Bridge and the main tower is the D2 Tower. In between the pillars of the bridge one can spot sections of the Palazzo Versace hotel. The water is part of the Dubai Creek. Just in front of me, in the water, was a school of leopard spotted rays swimming back and forwards in the water. On the normal exposures I took before this long exposure, they can be seen in the foreground. They looked very gracious.Time
The image was taken just before 10 in the morning. For this kind of photography I prefer to shoot around 9 to 10 in the morning or around 3 to 4 in the afternoon. At least here in Dubai.Lighting
I just wanted certain parts of the D2 Tower to be a bit lighter than the rest.Equipment
I shoot with Fuji X-H1 mainly because of the better cooling of the sensor compared to some of the other X series cameras. I mostly shoot with a 16mm f1.4 lens that renders amazing details. Shooting 4 minute exposure requires a sturdy tripod. I've gone for the Sirui R-5214XL which is one of the sturdiest on the market. I paired it with a Flexline double ball head to get a rock solid combination. For ND filters I use Formatt Hitech Firecrest spin-on.Inspiration
The D2 Tower is one of my favorite buildings in Dubai. One of the issues is that it's the only tall building in the area so it's a bit difficult to find some balance. The bridge in front of the tower helped a bit.Editing
This was one of the first images where I used Joel Tjintjelaar's B&W Artisan Pro X panel. First a mask had to be created to separate the sky from the rest. Then most of the details had to be masked by hand including the various panels on the tower. The image was converted into a neutral black and white image and then a darkened the sky a bit. With many hard selections available I could control the direction of light and shadows using the panel that creates gradients in a very smooth way. The idea is to make sure there is separation between every element and control the light in a way that you like. That helps to make the image look a bit more 3 dimensional. In my camera bag
I normally carry my X-H1 body with the 16 mm f1,4 fitted. I also bring a 23 mm f1.4 plus a 50-140mm telelens with 1,4 teleconverter. In addition I have 6 Formatt Hitec Firecrest spin-on filters (3, 4, 5, 6, 10 and 16 stops) plus adapter rings for different lens diameters and a remote control.Feedback
This is as far away from street and sports photography as one possibly can get. Sturdy tripod and tripod head is a must and so is also a remote plus some neutral density filters. Take your time with framing, take some bracketed normal shots just to make sure everything is OK and your subject is absolutely sharp. Then add the filters, switch to bulb mode, click and wait.
