Location
We were touring France and Spain in our motorhome. Driving up and down the coast we were trying to find a campsite when we happened on Almerimar. The campsite is a huge tarmac strip located by the breakwaters of a yacht harbour with a shallow sandy beach the other side.Time
We reached the campsite, set up and went to buy some beer and food. By this time it was evening and the light was dying, turning into a beautiful sultry evening with lots of photo opportunities around the harbour.Lighting
I had been shooting into the evening and the golden hour was one of those that just kept giving and giving the later it got. As I returned to the van I noticed a yacht coming into the harbour and with the sun setting behind it it was a perfect setup. I took a series of shots but this was the best.Equipment
The camera was a Sony A6300 with a 70-210 lens at 198mm, f7.1 and 1/800s. At those settings no tripod was necessary so it was shot handheld.Inspiration
One of the highlights of our trips were the sunsets and the colours at the golden hour. This was one of those exceptional evenings with loads of beautiful orange light and the yacht arriving at the time it did was a godsendEditing
The picture was processed in ON-1 using just manual processing. Very little editing was requiredIn my camera bag
I normally carry a camera with the kit lens - 18-55 or 24-70, a prime like a 35mm or 50mm and a longer zoom. I have lately become hooked on 70-200 but if birds are in the offing the I carry a longer one. I also carry a polarising filter and mostly shoot handheld.Feedback
There is no substitute for being in the right place at the right time, making the most of your opportunities as they appear. I love taking photos by the sea. Don't go home too early and be prepared to deal with whatever light you are given - there will always be an opportunity.
