Behind The Lens

Location

This capture was photographed at my home in the Pacific Northwest. I cherish my space on a little slice of paradise, known commonly as Harstine Island- it is true wonderland for nature photographers like myself!

Time

I always have my camera on me, literally, wherever I go. The ever changing lighting throughout the day inspires new perspectives. It helps keeping this mindset while staying home and staying healthy. The fence picking up the day's last light from within my property's edge resonated with my feelings about two months into isolation. I captured this mid-evening in May 2020.

Lighting

Here in Washington state, we are surrounded with the tranquility of lucious forests and enormous evergreen trees and foliage. The drama of the shadows and light streaks that naturally occur here is what initially caught my eye and inspired me to want to capture those moments and share the feelings behind them with photography. The lighting of this photo is over dramatic, ranging from deep blacks to hot whites- portraying my current vibes perfectly.

Equipment

As I mentioned, my camera is like an extension of my body- always ready to click at a moment's notice. This particular day, I had my entry-level Nikon D5000 on me with the 18-55mm kit lens. I collect old camera and lenses and often experiment with adapters for the lenses to be compatible with my newer cameras. For most of my adventures, I love my Nikon D5000, D5100 and D5200 cameras and my Canon Rebel t6.

Inspiration

Being at home is nothing new for me and my family, we love our home and have a gorgeous piece of property to enjoy. However, being told to stay home was a whole new experience. I saw the fencing and the way the light was setting upon it and felt like that moment probably could describe most of the world feelings while we are going day to day waiting for our next instructions. The feeling of not knowing what to expect while being instructed to stay still is a glimpse of the massive overload of overwhelming feelings I felt at the time I captured this picture.

Editing

So, I typically do not do any sort of editing of my work. Usually, if anything, I lower the exposure to bring out more details. On this particular photo, I rotated the original landscape orientation to be portrait, as I found it to be a great background on my smartphone's lock screen.

In my camera bag

I am never without at least one camera body, it's 'kit' lens, an extra battery if possible, it's battery charger, the 75-300mm lens, a professional cleaning kit and tripod. After I purchased my Canon and downloaded the Canon connect app, my smartphone and it's charger and a solar charging battery pack is now inclusive within my cameras carrying case. And, after years of experience and one too many predicaments I get myself (and my equipment!) caught up in, I now always include a multi tool, just in case that perfect shots location gets the best of me (examples include my camera strap caught in thorny blackberry bushes and my bag stuck under the exposed roots of a tree)!

Feedback

The only advice I like to give about photography is try to capture more a the the feeling behind the subject or moment, and not to focus too much on the object. The looks of a photo is nothing compared to the feelings it suggests to it's audience. My only aspiration is inspiration!
