The sun blazing through clouds behind the statue of Marianne in place de la République. The monument to the republic was commissioned in 1879, designed by Léopold Morice and François-Charles Morice and replaced la fontaine du Château d’eau, which was moved to place Félix-Éboué. Previously named place du Château d’Eau, the square was named place de la République in 1889, six years after the monument à la République was inaugurated.
