This boat has been sitting here since I was a kid. I'm 49 years old now and it still sits in Gozo.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Gozo, sister island to Malta.

Time

I was headed into the caves in the afternoon.

Lighting

The light was perfect right overhead and accordingly, it was about 12 ish. It was hot really hot, that kind of heat that radiates out of the landscape too and you could smell the wood getting dryer on the boats.

Equipment

I used my Nikon, I just sort of took a quick look around to find the best vantage point and for this picture, it was just a matter of moving in slightly closer, no added elevation. honestly, I wanted to capture the boat as it had sat, no fanfare, no wow angles, just the boat as it had sat for over 28 years. Those that the picture spoke to, would no it didn't need any colour correction, it was all original, thus making it all the more familiar.

Inspiration

I remembered my island for 28 years in my head and this was one of the images I remembered. I returned with my daughter almost 30 plus years later on her birthday and also her first visit to the island. As I walked over the crest of the hill I instantly glanced to the rt and there she was still nestled in the underbrush...the boat with an amazing history no doubt. It was a sign to me that the memory wasn't just something that lived in my head all these years, it really did exist still. Now when I described it or mentioned it my daughter could say she knew exactly what I was talking about. have you ever returned to an old spot and found it unchanged, well that unchanged moment changes you right there and then.

Editing

This picture is a moment in time on Gozo unchanged by ''progress'' it came with its own processing from 30 years of sun, sea breeze, and rainstorms. No alternations required for this shot. I guess you could say it too 30+ years to process:)

In my camera bag

Action cams, Olympus. batteries, quick chargers, my Nikon if my intent is to get a memorable picture that day, cause otherwise, it is heavy.

Feedback

For me returning to places with substantial memories for me and an amazing history has always helped me capture unique shots. Malta is a treasure trove of unchanged side roads and moments in time IF you know where to look. Then it is a matter of just knowing when the light is best at that time of day for your particular picture. sunset for boats on the water, high noon for detailed well lit pictures of objects 5pm to 7pm for amazing colours on the island when shooting the actual island views. do I always get the perfect lit shot? No, but what a great hobby walking about on-location creating my very own screen savers and postcard memories to look back on in later years. BTW I love finding new locations online, saving the pictures and then going to them in person and taking my own picture there, sometimes with me in the frame. It's a must-try if you have never done it. I also enjoy finding vintage photos from the past and I go to the modern-day location and take an after picture to compare the vintage picture too :) I hope that helps you.
