Behind The Lens

Location

I actually took this photo in my grandparents back yard.

Time

I would say it was around 3-5pm somewhere either right before sunset or around sunset.

Lighting

Nothing specific, however, I did try faxing her in a way where the sun was not shining directly into her face because personally I like a moody look.

Equipment

I used a Canon T7i with a Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 lens

Inspiration

I was inspired by her. The child in this photo is my little cousin, she is one of my biggest inspirations in my life. I love her more than anything in the world. I wanted to portray a sense of calm, quiet and rest. But I also wanted the photo to have mystery. I often get the question was she sad? Was she content? Was she looking at something? I always say it is up to your imagination. I wanted to create a photo that was questioned.

Editing

There was not much post production done to this image. I remember correctly I took it into Lightroom, I first made it into a black and white then I messed around with the controls. I made it slightly more of a blue toned image. I increased the clarity just slightly while also increasing the shadows and reducing the highlights. I think that was about all I did to the image.

In my camera bag

I have two separate bags. A small and a large. Let’s talk my large bag, it has everything. 3 lenses including the one attached to my camera body, a lensball, cleaning cloths, cleaning pen, SD cards, extra batteries, a change of clothes just in case (depending where I go), ND filters (which I have yet to learn), a pen, business cards, a water, and lastly sometimes I’ll bring my tripod but not often. If I bring my small bag it is usually my one one lens attached to my camera, extra batteries and SD cards and that is all.

Feedback

I think my biggest advice would be get to know your subject. Know their quirks, their expressions and how their face movies. Though this little girl is not necessarily my client I still do the same steps with my client. I talk with them, I get to know them before I shoot. With her I know her so well I know her movements. I know what she can and can’t do. Sometimes I try and push to see if she can do something and when it turns out she can’t I adapt and change, it’s what you have to do. For this image I suggest lying someone down on their stomach wherever you want the background to be. Then you lay on the ground also get to the same level as them, be equal. Then say the words I want you to be calm and soft if it doesn’t work mess around with different phrases. It took me a while to get a phrase that made her face look the way it did. Good Luck!! If you ever recreate this please tag me as well!
