Location
The Lily was sitting next to the kitchen sink near the window full of my wife’s orchids. The kitchen is in the southwest corner of our house in Glendale, Arizona.Time
It was in the late afternoon in April.Lighting
The late afternoon sunlight was streaming in underneath the shaded patio from the southwest to provide just the right natural side lighting.Equipment
I shot the photo with my iPhone7, handheld. No other equipment was involved.Inspiration
There are times when I see pictures everywhere. I’m heavily influenced by the hues and compositions of paintings by the Dutch Masters, especially Van Meer. Sometimes I just can’t tear myself away from a picture I see calling out to me. It could be anything and it could hit me anywhere at almost any time. The lily with the light streaming in caught my eye and wouldn’t let me go.Editing
I made several shots and began reviewing them for format and composition of the leaves and the flowers. I picked one that had the right feel, pushed the color saturation and reduced the light using in-phone features and then cropped it for maximum visual focus. In my camera bag
I have a Canon 80D, but the iPhone is much more agile and editing features are just so good and immediately accessible. Apple has made it so good, even a unsophisticated wannabe with half an eye can seem like an artistic genius. Voila!Feedback
There’s no substitute for training your eye and understanding the rudimentaries of good composition, especially how to lead the eye of the viewer. Some people are born with that eye. But others who weren’t so blessed can be trained, or train themselves with study and intention, so as to surpass even those born with the gift. What is your dream? What is your desire? Pursue it and show the world what you believe in the deepest part of you! Remember the timeless beauty of a Van Meer, but never forget the singular, uncompromising passion of Van Gogh!
