Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on the coast of Galicia, Spain. This was an unique chance to take it, cause my girlfriend (the person in the image) and me didn´t meet too much at that time.

Time

I remember clearly that the pic was taken at evening, probably over 7pm, cause we had been on the beach before it started to get cold.

Lighting

It´s curious, because the sun is almost behind her but a bit on the right side. That light helps make it look mysterous.

Equipment

The camera was a Pentax K-5 and the lens was a SMC-FA 50-mm f/1.4. I love that lens, it´s bokeh is beautiful.

Inspiration

I suppose mostly my relationship with her, that helps me to stay close and look for the right expression being patient.

Editing

The ordinary aspects like sharpening and contrast were easy. Then, I tried to figure out what kind of pic this looks like and I believed that it was like a war documentary photo, so I tried to replicate that kind of feeling in the colour balance.

In my camera bag

I use now a different body, I have a Pentax K-3 II cause I needed an improvement in terms of resolution, but it´s mostly the same camera than K-5. Then, I like to stay close when I want to photograph something and I love wide angle lenses, so I have a Samyang Fish-Eye 8mm f3.5 and a Samyang 24mm 1.4, I really like this last one cause it´s manual and you can play with its f1.4 with depth of field. Recently I got my last acquisition: a Sigma 10-20mm f4.5 cause I felt I needed an all terrain wide lens, now I use it mostly for landscapes. Then, my already named 50mm f1.4, exquisite pearl, especially in terms of portrait. And, for the last but no least, I an old 75-200mm Tokina, it was a gift from a friend´s father and I thought I was going to use it less than I really use it, its particularly useful in macro.

Feedback

Photograph everything around you, that things you have close, cause you know them better. You don't need to go to another continent to get good pictures. And, in terms of portraits, the relation with the person is 50%, so take the opportunities around you cause you have family and friends you can photograph patiently.
