Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Arizona/Nevada border, Southeast of Vegas. First time hiking this trail and it was a tough one! Plenty of ups and downs with some loose gravel. It's a moderate to advanced hike.

Time

Starting the hike late afternoon, it was during cooler weather in March. March 29th to be exact. The flowers blooming here were stunning. I had no idea I'd be in for such a treat with the views of the Colorado River here. Time taken at 4:14pm after one heck of a workout getting over the hump to this section.

Lighting

As photographers know that either early morning or later day lighting is better, the sun was behind the mountains here at just the right level. No harsh shadows. Getting off trail a bit helped let the sun go down some before I saw this scenery. So that part of getting lost was a good thing!

Equipment

Sony A7III with the Sony 85 1.8 prime. Handheld, no tripod or filter. Sometimes a longer lens makes for great landscape photos. Always bring one.

Inspiration

Just seeing the wonderful scenery of the area, my fellow photographer went one way up higher and I went down some. I always bring a wide angle lens and now will always have my 85 (or longer) with me. They are lighter lenses so they help get some great shots without causing me to lose energy with heavier gear. At first while seeing the beautiful green landscape and blooming flowers, I thought my wide would be good. Then I thought to see what the 85 would show and I came out with this gem. The region is inspiring in itself!

Editing

With my landscape work, I always post-process. I use a combination of Lightroom, Luminar 4 and at times Affinity Photo or Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I normally have my two Sony A7III's and a Canon 5DIV. Lenses I use now are the Tamron 17-28, the Sony 85 1.8 and the Canon 70-200 II. Tripod and ball head are Benro brand. Shopping for a lighter tripod first thing for longer, more strenuous hikes.

Feedback

First, make sure you're healthy. Some hikes like this one are tough and take a toll on your body. Bring water and a light snack if going out longer. Make sure your gear is light too. Certain areas are closed during summer for good reason. Safety and health first. Then get out and keep practicing.
