Location
This photo was taken at my friend's apartment, I was taking a photography course during my first years in college so we spent the day shooting in and around the apartment complex.Time
This was taken later in the evening, her window faced the west so we had to wait until the sun was in the right position to acquire a stunning silhouette portrait. This was taken on November 9th, 2014 probably around 4pm.Lighting
I wanted to create a stunning and very distinct silhouette, when the sun was in the right spot it was still bright but since it was getting close to dusk it wasn't too bright, which helped illuminate the texture on the window and added to the overall feel.Equipment
This was shot on Nikon D5100 with a 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 lens, no other equipment was used.Inspiration
This photo was created for a photography course project entitled "In the Likeness of Someone Great", our professor gave us a list of well known photographers where each student would pick one photographer to study and shoot our own photos in as similar of fashion as possible. I chose Anton Corbijn, which at the time I was unfamiliar with and instantly fell in love with.Editing
Luckily the lighting was almost perfect so there wasn't much I had to do, I converted the photo to B&W, added a sepia split tone and bumped the contrast to match Corbijn's style. In my camera bag
For portraits and high quality photos I use my Nikon D5100 with either my 18-55mm or 55-200mm lens depending on location and I always make sure to carry my white balance card with me so I can get accurate colors.Feedback
Have fun, get creative, stay inspired. Silhouettes can be fairly easy to take when the sun is perfectly angled, if you're unfamiliar with capturing silhouettes start out by taking photos at different times and see what you like best. I personally like taking silhouettes during golden hour, the sun is still bright enough but isn't too harsh and won't wash out the rest of the frame.
