Since April last year, my mother lives in a closed ward for elderly people with dementia. Photography has always been a great hobby of hers and it was something she loved for us to do together. Our weekends away, with the cameras, are precious memories and became something unthinkable to ever happen again. Even photographing seemed unthinkable for her until I came up with the idea of giving her an instax mini hoping that operating this camera would be easy enough for her. Since then she has emerged as the paparazzi of the nursing home and takes photos of everything, even without a film. Two days ago, my sister called with the news that the nursing home organized a way to see our mother. With a cherry picker, family visits would be lifted to the top floor where the closed section of the home is. Then we could see each other for a moment. A telephone connection was also provided so we could also speak to each other. Really well organized from nursing home 'Pieter Pauw' One of my first thoughts was, oooh nice, then I take my camera with me. So to get up there yesterday and see my mother 'at the ready' with her camera was so endearing. She had come up with exactly the same thing and suddenly we were shooting together again.
