Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on Degraves Street in Melbourne CBD. Degraves Street is a food hub of the City with some great atmosphere and subjects for photography. Always a great go to location.

Time

This photo was taken after last light at around 9pm. This enabled the neon to really stand out as the focus.

Lighting

I wanted this image to highlight the smooth gradients of the various purple, pink and green hues.

Equipment

This photo was shot handheld on a Nikon D750 with a 70-200mm Nikkor lens.

Inspiration

I was in the mood to challenge my creativity and ended up on a nighttime stroll around the city. The lack of daylight brings out so many previously unseen subjects and interesting lighting opportunities that catch the eye. I couldn't miss the opportunity to capture the neon, the colour gradients of the surrounding building and the text on the sign "Always good for doughnuts".

Editing

I did post-process this image! I enhanced the contrast and the saturation slightly to really make the colours pop and give the image some dynamic depth.

In my camera bag

The standard kit for me is my Nikon D750, a 24 -70mm lens and a 70 - 200mm lens, a speedlight, a variable ND filter and a manfrotto tripod.

Feedback

Pick a nice night and just go for a walk. Challenge yourself to make seemingly ordinary objects interesting and fun through the use of different angles and lighting. Look for objects, or a series of objects that tell a story, and lastly, trail different combinations of settings to achieve various effects until you find a style you like.
