Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at, I believe, Goodale Park in Columbus, Ohio. near My girlfriend (the one pictured) and I had just driven from Pittsburgh to attend a concert at Skull's Music-Diner, and we wanted to take a couple of pictures around the city.

Time

This photo was taken at 5:20 PM on March 1st, 2020. We had gone to one other place prior to this photo, but the three batteries I brought were all nearly dead, and I wasn't a fan of the scenery in our first location. We went looking for a local park or something similar, something that could definitely provide with something decent looking and I preserved the remaining juice in my batteries as much as possible.

Lighting

I love cloudy weather! Clouds provide a natural diffusion on your subject and background and make your workflow SIGNIFICANTLY faster. I positioned myself so that the sun was directed towards her face so I could lower my exposure enough to not have the sky blown out.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 70D with a Sigma 50mm Art f1.4

Inspiration

What inspired me to take this photo is my girlfriend, as she is the biggest support in my photo-taking. Being able to take the photos I take of her, or just any photo in general, edit them to how I like them, and showing them to see and seeing his reaction is my biggest inspiration and motivation to keep doing what I love doing.

Editing

I originally attached one of my self-made Lightroom presets to the image and it was VERY over-exposed. I went down a full stop in the exposure, used the spot removal tool to remove some of the acne on my girlfriend's face (she asked me to, don' worry), cropped the image to a 4x5 aspect ratio, and exported!

In my camera bag

Typically, I'll pack my Sigma 50mm Art f1.4 and my Sigma 18-35 Art f1.8 wherever I go. Those two lenses will typically cover all of the range that I prefer to work with.

Feedback

Modeling your significant other is a fantastic way to achieve certain emotions, such as love and appreciation, that models may have to struggle a bit to get to!
