Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a trek in the Khumbu Valley of Nepal in 2018. This particular trek was from Lukla to Everest Base Camp.

Time

This was taken in the early morning, at the beginning of a long day of trekking.

Lighting

The best time to shoot in the Khumbu Valley in Nepal is in the morning, while the air is crisp and very clear, offering great visibility and a tinge of blue to the mountains.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon EOS Rebel SL1. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

My goal during the trek in Nepal was to take landscape photos. While I took many photos, by the end of my trip, this is one that stood out: the composure with the foreground and background, the balanced exposure, and the many colors provided by prayer flags and the morning hues of blue all mixed well to give this picture a nice equilibrium.

Editing

I did some basic post-processing, but nothing major. I slightly tweaked the contrast, increased saturation, and brought out the blues. I also slightly increased sharpness and definition to bring out the foreground.

In my camera bag

This was taken during a 10-month trip through Asia, and I shot the entire 10 months on a fixed 24mm f/2.8 lens. While this could sometimes be limiting, it improved my photography and especially my composition as I was always challenged to work with what I was given!

Feedback

When shooting in the Khumbu Valley on a trek in Nepal, the best time to shoot is in the morning before the clouds roll in and obstruct the view of the mountains. The morning also provides the most crisp air for great visibility, and really nice, soft lighting for landscapes.
