The Sand Hill Crane is a magnificent bird. It's wing span is huge. When flying in they generally make a honking sound that echos throughout the area, just amazing.

Behind The Lens

Location

Where I live in Florida there is an abundance of wildlife. So I was walking around my property, camera in hand, looking for something to photograph, and there it was. Sandhill Cranes are always flying in to dig in the dirt for bugs to eat. This one just looked up at me, and I took the shot.

Time

These very large birds like to fly in around morning time. So this was around 9:00 am. Sometimes they will arrive late in the day, just as the sun is setting. They will hang around for a while, and then take with a mighty thunder making this honking sound.

Lighting

I like to take advantage of ambient lighting, it just ads more to the image.

Equipment

I enjoy the freedom of a hand held camera. This shot was taken with a 50mm 1.8 Nikkor lens.

Inspiration

I just love photographing these amazing big birds. They remind me of prehistoric times, because of their size and the sound they make, just amazing.

Editing

I always review my photos in Lightroom. This image did not require much of anything.

In my camera bag

I generally carry camera, telephoto and fix lens.

Feedback

As you can imagine, most birds will not let you get close to them.. That is why I always a telephoto lens, long zoom for bird photography. However, Sandhill Cranes are typically not afraid to be approached.
