Behind The Lens

Location

I am fortunate to live in an area with miles of waterfront. I was roaming the beach in Westport, Massachusetts with no specific plan or goal for shooting photos. I knew something would catch my eye.

Time

We had a relatively warm and snow-free winter this year in Massachusetts so it was a great day to be outdoors. I shot this on February 23, 2020 at 2 PM.

Lighting

It was a cloudy day which made it perfect for shooting at the beach, less glare and the potential for richer colors.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon EOS 80D, aperture f/9 and shutter speed 1/500. No tripod.

Inspiration

There were lots of birds at the beach that day so I decided to attempt to capture some birds in action. I love a challenge. I've never been that successful with bird photography. I am envious when I see the success other photographers have capturing birds in their natural habitat.

Editing

When I first looked at the shot I was torn between keeping it in color or making it black & white. After comparing the two versions, I felt the color was distracting. The black & white version offered more drama. Using Lightroom, I focused on creating distinctive gray shades on the bird while keeping the background simple.

In my camera bag

I travel light most days. One camera (Canon EOS 80D), one lens (18-135 mm) and a tripod.

Feedback

My advice is simple. Don't give up if you have an idea. Just keep taking those shots. I started taking photos in the film days. You never knew what you had until you were in the darkroom. I love the digital world.
