Location
Location: At an equestrian centre near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Subject: Seven-year-old Tia is a Pinto Canadian Warmblood. She stands 16.1hh (5 ft 5 in) and weighs 1100 pounds.Time
It was 10:30 in the morning in late September. Typical West Coast weather: cold, misty, and damp, all at the same time.Lighting
We were near a forest. This photo was towards the east, which showed some late morning light behind the trees.Equipment
I took the picture in natural light with a hand-held Sony a7. Lens: FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS. ISO 200, 50mm, ƒ/4.5.Inspiration
Tia is personable, curious, playful, says her owner. "Anything you do with her, she has to be right there. She loves to pose for photos." I'd have to agree. The look Tia gave me when I was about to take her picture? She straightened her neck, moved her chin slightly upward, and turned her eye towards me. It was almost like she permitted this shot. Click. Miss Tia's session with me was over unless I had a treat. Sadly, my camera didn't cut it.Editing

Horses often check you out before they decide if you are worthy of taking their photo. They'll be sure to let you know when the time is right.
