Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Ireland last year on Achill Island whilst I was exploring an abandoned village on the side of a mountain. I was actually visiting family so I didn't go with the intention of capturing many photos but I took my camera with me just in case. Looking back now I'm happy I made that decision since I took some of my favourite photos.

Time

It was in the early afternoon just after a storm had pasted over us and the sky was gloomy.

Lighting

The poor weather doesn't normally allow for particularly nice lighting, however a storm had just pasted over and it left me with slightly dull but moody lighting which I believe gave the sheep more character.

Equipment

My gear was rather bare when I took this. The camera was the slightly outdated Nikon D7000 which from my use performs fine despite it's age. With this I used a 18-105mm to make sure I didn't need to get too close to the sheep but at the same time not too far away to make sure the sheep's facial definition was still visible.

Inspiration

It was never planned as I stumbled across the herd of sheep I thought why not. Yes, it's not the most interesting description but in all honesty I just thought it's not everyday you come across a brave sheep like this that doesn't run away from you.

Editing

Only the usual: tuned up the exposure, clarity but also turned up the saturation of the grass since my original image didn't reflect how the scene looked in real life.

In my camera bag

I like to keep everything very simple in my Lowepro shoulder bag; camera, only one lens depending what I'll be shooting and 2 spare batteries. That's it. It's all I ever need and makes me look like less of a tourist because I never carry around a massive backpack.

Feedback

Just go for it! Never overthink it. The majority of my favourite photos are ones that I never plan on shooting because they are normally situations that I come across as a suprise. Sure, planning does help but in my experience it's the moments that you're not always ready for that produce the best scenes.
