Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while on a little cruise boat in the Docklands in Melbourne. I looked out of the window and saw the the way the lights of the city danced on the water and thought it was beautiful so I had to take a picture.

Time

It was around 10pm when I came across this stunning part of the city. Inspiration hit and I took the picture!

Lighting

I think the most interesting part about the lighting in this photo is the way it dances on the water and how well the colours reflect on the water. Also, the way it is shown in the sky is lovely

Equipment

This was taken before I got my Nikon camera. Just my Samsung Galaxy s9 phone. It's amazing what photos you can take with a phone these days

Inspiration

I'm more of an in the moment photographer. While I'm out and about, or exploring, I keep my eye out for something that inspires me in that moment and go for it. For me, going out with the intention of snapping something in particular doesn't give as good results as the in the moment photography. Everyone has to do what works for them

Editing

I am still new to photography. Still finding my way around processing and tweaking photos. For this photo I only made small changes. A filter that made the lights' colour pop more, a bit of sharpening, I think that was about it for this photo

In my camera bag

I am only a new photographer. I have a few things in my bag. Always a second battery, I like to be prepared and I would hate to not have power when inspiration strikes! I'm a big fan of nature photos and landscapes so my light filters come in handy. I also have a bunch of lenses on hand, my polarising ones help with nature shots. A lense cleaner for if dirt or anything gets on the lenses whilst out and about. Remote control so I can have my Nikon set up and take a shot and not have movement, or even have me in it if I'm out on my own. I have also recently added a circle flash to my bag for a change in portraits. It's exciting adding new things to my bag!

Feedback

As I have said I am only a newbie. My only advice is trust your eyes and let your inspiration flow. Take many shots to make sure you get what you want out of the area, the lights, the movement and subject. Take the photos you like to take and have fun with them!
