Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at a local animal shelter that had brought in some bobcats from a local rescue for the public to be able to learn about them. Before we arrived, they were allowing people to hold them, but by the time we got there, the cats had had enough of people and were a bit feisty. Although I did not get to hold it, I am very pleased that he posed for me for this photo!

Time

This was mid afternoon. It was a fairly hot day, and although he was under a tent, you could tell he was warm. It was taken on August 17, 2019 at 1:18pm.

Lighting

I was very lucky on the lighting on this one. He was under a tent, but thankfully, the tent coloring did not come through, and all that shows is the amazing natural light of the day.

Equipment

I wasn't fully prepared for this, and so this was taken on my phone. A Samsung 9. I did slight manipulation in Snapseed.

Inspiration

Having never seen a bobcat up close and personal with out any protection (like at a zoo), I NEEDED to get his photograph! He was calmly resting on the rescuers lap, while trying to cool down. He was the perfect subject!

Editing

I only did slight manipulation in Snapseed on my phone. I cropped it in a bit, added some vignette. That's it!

In my camera bag

On a normal outdoor shoot , I would be carrying my Canon 30D (yes, I know it is outdated, but it still takes amazing photos!) with 2 Canon lenses, a 17-85 with image stabilization, and a 70-200, 2.8 with image stabilization. I find these two lenses give me all I need to capture just about anything I want. I have tried other lenses, but nothing compares to the image quality that my Canon lenses produce! I wouldn't have anything else in my bag! I also have a Canon flash if needed in darker situations, like in a wooded area.

Feedback

Photographing animals can be a challenge. I wouldn't recommend getting this close to a wild animal, but this one was a baby who had been rescued and was use to people. With the rescuer holding him, he was good with me being close and getting his portrait. There were many people around, so he was mesmerized with something off behind me, which kept him very still. In this situation, having someone the bobcat was familiar with really helped keep him still and comforted while I was able to get up close and personal!
