Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the London Eye - At the time, I was studying abroad, and I was amazed at the opportunities and stories that walked toward me.

Time

This was one of those times that I took my camera everywhere. I couldn't bear the thought of missing a moment. I remember waiting in line forever, then finally and slowly going up. By the time we hit the top, it was late afternoon - the sun was about to start setting. Everything was lining up beautifully: the lighting, the people, and that intangible feeling of rightness. Like the even the rotation of the earth was on my side. Over time, I have found myself becoming an opportunistic photographer. I plan for what cannot possibly be expected.

Lighting

Lighting is one of those things that cannot be taken for granted. Every single setting on the camera is made to adjust light and how it is recorded. In this particular moment, I got lucky. The sun was not only setting, but it was on the ideal side of my subjects, illuminating the most important part of the story - the two sisters.

Equipment

I had a Nikon D600 with a 70mm lens, and because London is a walking city, that is all I had.

Inspiration

While I was in London, I found myself missing my family. I have three sisters and one brother that I hadn't seen in months. When I saw these two girls, it reminded me of my siblings and how it feels to be with them. You don't have to talk or try, you can just be. That relationship is something worth sharing - worth recording.

Editing

At first, I wasn't going to do any post-editing, but I threw it in a program just for fun. As I fiddled around, I found some aspects of the picture I had not seen before. I started adjusting toward a silver-like overtone and brought down the saturation just enough to create a memory like essence. By the time I was done, it became exactly the feeling that I had when I took it - like a dream of something far off.

In my camera bag

I have three things in my bag. A Nikon D600 body. A 70mm lens. And a 50mm lens. I enjoy traveling light because I am a walking photographer and these three things get the job done. To me, it is more about the story you want to tell, and as long as you have that, you can do anything with what you have.

Feedback

The only advice I can give you is to keep your eyes open. There are moments and stories all around you waiting to be told. Don't be afraid to make it personal, painful, or rough. If you have something to say, say it.
