Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in Stone Mountain Park, Georgia, United States. Stone Mountain is a quartz monzonite dome monadnock and is dubbed as "the largest exposed piece of granite in the world".

Time

This shot was taken around 5:45 PM. It was one of the last boat rides available for that day.

Lighting

I loved the cloud formation in this picture. The sun rays added the element of wow. To bring out the best, I decided to give this image a HDR touch.

Equipment

This was shot in 2012. At that time, I was shooting using Canon Rebel T2i. This is a handheld shot taken while on a moving boat. This was shot at 24 mm using a standard kit lens - Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens.

Inspiration

When I got on the boat, I loved the composition. My first attraction was the sun rays and clouds. I was lucky to capture the clouds, rays, water, treeline, and the mountain itself in one frame.

Editing

To bring out the best of the cloud and sunrays, I decided to go HDR with this so that I could blend multiple exposures. I did not go with HDR all the way so it still has the feel of a regular photograph.

In my camera bag

I am currently shooting using Nikon Z7. I am using a NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S, a wide-angle (dx 10-24), Prime (50mm f/1.4) and a zoom (fx 70-300) for now.

Feedback

In a shot like this, it is a bit of both luck and technique. I was lucky to get clouds and rays like this. But as I was in a moving boat with a handheld camera, I had to be super cautious to ensure there is no motion blur. Wait for the right moment, breathe, and take the shot.
