Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in the Shanghai community of Shelby, North Carolina. This fire department is where I started my first career as a firefighter. The house burning in the background was a friends house being demolished for future expansion of the airport. I had also done some remodeling work on this house during a part-time career as a carpenter.

Time

It was an mid morning practice burn/training fire with several local fire departments participating.

Lighting

It was a partly cloudy day with intermittant bright sun, then clouds or smoke changing the light quickly. Lots of adjusting of settings due to the sunlight, fire, smoke and clouds.

Equipment

I was using a Nikon D500 and probably a Nikon Nikkor 85 mm 1:1.8 lens

Inspiration

After having spent 20 plus years as a firefighter, I wanted to give a little recognition back to them. Being on the scene with only a camera gave almost as much adrenaline as fighting the fire.

Editing

No, I believe this was as shot.

In my camera bag

My Nikon D500 plus a Nikkor 85mm 1.8, a Tamron 10-24 mm F/3.5-4.5, and either a Nikon 80-200 mm or 200-500 mm for long range shooting.

Feedback

Be careful and get to know the emergency workers before trying to take pictures. If you don't have experience on an emergency scene, stay back, things can get deadly quickly.
