Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken inside North America's only ice hotel called Hotel de Glace which is located just outside of Quebec City. This hotel is rebuilt every year with each year having a different theme. This moment was captured from the outdoor spa area of the hotels 20th anniversary design.

Time

I arrived at the hotel in the afternoon and spent a long time walking around looking at all the unique room ice sculptures. It wasn't until shortly after the sunset on a gloomy day that we made it to the spa which is located in this outdoor courtyard.

Lighting

The combination of different materials in this photo is complemented by the light cones accenting the door frame. This immediately caught my attention. The timing wasn't planned but I'm thankful I stayed at the hotel for a few hours so I was able to see it transition from day to night.

Equipment

This was shot using my iPhone XR with Moment's wide angle lens attachment.

Inspiration

I've wanted to visit Quebec City for a long time and my first trip was going to be in the winter. There is no way I was going to leave without visiting the ice hotel. Walking through the hotel was a surreal experience. When I saw doors leading out to a courtyard, it was one of those moments where you stop and take it all in. I needed to capture that moment before I walked back inside through these doors.

Editing

The post processing on this image is quite light, just minor tweaks to the colors and white balance to make the snow appear more blue.

In my camera bag

My standard kit right now is a Nikon Z7 with a 24-70 lens. This allows me to capture pretty much anything that might happen while I am out. I never leave home without Moment's wide angle lens attachment for my phone. Even if I have my full frame camera with me, there are times where I am shooting images with both the camera and the phone. I also have the DJI Mini 2 packed in my kit now just in case I want to share something cool from above!

Feedback

You don't need a big fancy camera to capture good images. Almost everyone has an amazing camera on them at all times, their smart phone! Use a good camera app and learn how to use it beyond the standard point and shoot options. Pay attention to the framing and composition of your photo. It's not needed, but I do find the Moment lens attachments enhance the phone's lens more than any other attachment I have tried. Finally, every photo can use a little color enhancement, just be careful not to overdo it.
