Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on Route 66 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I was shooting the neon signs that remain along the route when I walked past an adobe office complex. I just took a series of standard building shots, one of which resulted in this presentation.

Time

Taken at 5:09pm on December 9, 2019. The shot was taken in a southeasterly direction with the sun beginning to lower to the west. The shadows to the top left are the result of this.

Lighting

Nothing particularly special about the lighting other than winter with a low sun later in the day.

Equipment

I am more of an opportunistic photographer in that I will roam around until a view presents itself to me. Usually I just slip a lens on a base and off I go - no tripod, flash, etc. I do carry filters in my pocket (notice: pocket, not pack. I travel light.). This was taken with a well-used Nikon D5200, Tamron 70-200 lens also near the end of its useful life, on auto mode. I do frequently use Auto when I am just roaming around even though I am skilled in the other settings.

Inspiration

The series of shot of the office complex was my last ones of the day. I usually end a period of shooting by taking what I call "throw away shots" that are done quickly with very little consideration of what I am doing. Every once in a while I hit a gem - for example, once I took a shot from behind my back with a point-and-shoot as I was walking home; it has won multiple awards!

Editing

Yes, this is where I spend my time. I begin with Lightroom, consider enhancements with Nik and On1, the run through Photoshop. The end photo I then check with Luminar. Five programs on most shots. The interesting regression on this shot comes from the "Distort" filter in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

Most times now I am just walking around with my cell phone, Apple 11Pro. I am really trying to use it for most everything. It my be heretical but the future of photography is in your pocket and on your computer screen. If I am on a serious shoot I usually have my cell, a point-and-shoot, two bases and three lenses. Usually I throw them in a backpack with a couple filters, tons of batteries, cleaning equipment, plus tons of food and water. I will have a tripod in the trunk of my car, but it usually just grows mold.

Feedback

There is nothing special here: just go out and shooting everything that catches your eye. Then shoot some more. Get them on the computer and go to it. If I had one recommedation I would say, "Learn everything you can about using the post-processing programs out there!" Then take tons of time to use them.
