Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home studio and a ring light

Time

I actually took this photo at midnight. A lot of my favorite ideas come to me around that time and I just went with it! Spontaneous shoots always end up being my best shots.

Lighting

I wanted to emphasize the eye region to get my message across. So I used a ring light and mounted the camera level with my eyes.

Equipment

I believe this was actually a shot I took on my iPhone. I normally don't like to do my work with my phone, but I believe this was on selfie mode so I could see myself.

Inspiration

As someone of the LGBT community, I have faced many ups and downs. I've been mistreated and abandoned by those I loved. I've been ridiculed and abused. Entirely for who I loved. I lived with my single mother in small town nowhere, and it wasn't something that was ever brought up in our house. So when a friend from school saw me sneak a kiss with a girl, she ran straight to my mother and told her everything. My mother picked me up from school early, took me home and beat me until I told her it was a phase. She tore apart my entire room as I watched her rage. I wasn't ready to come out. I wasn't ready. I was forced to live with the abuse until I eventually went to college at 17. This photo was inspired by the hardships it took for me to stay true to who I am. Regardless of what others thought or said. I'm living my truth, and I wake up grateful I made it through everyday.

Editing

I added a water color effect vector, adjusted some exposure, and skin smoothing!

In my camera bag

In my camera bag, I normally have my Canon EOS T7i , Nikon D3200, multiple lenses for each. For this photo, I used an iPhone 7+

Feedback

If you're inspired by this or any of my other sets, my advice is to focus on the story you're trying to tell. Pay attention to the emotion and essence of your model or yourself to get In tune with feelings they/you may have. Make it work to your advantage and be spontaneous!
