We was taking a holiday (vaction) in Pafos in Cyprus, Just having some lunch on the beach front and there was a crowd of people around this beatiful Pelican. I got my camera and took some photos and managed to get up quite close to it. It was quite friendly and probably the best model I've ever photographed!Time
Lunch time haha! It was around midday, I know this as we were having some lunch at the time when we saw the bird related commotion!Lighting
Despite being midday the bird was around some buildings so in the shade which was very sensible for the bird and very helpfull for me. I edited it slightly to tone down the background and bring out the colours in the bird as it was a beautifull pink colour. Maybe if I had some time I might have set up a small amount of reflective flash but it may have startled the pelicanEquipment
It was a while ago but I think I had my cannon EOS 80d at the time with a cannon 50mm portrait lense.Inspiration
Being on holiday in a beatifull place makes me just photo everything to get a feel for the place and eventuallu get drawn in to something that interests me. This was one of those things and it went from street photography to what felt like photograhing a model. The pelican was almost posing for me.Editing
Yes, I used lightroom just to crop in and bring out some of the detail by boosting the contrast, I think I lowered the dark tones a bit to highlight the bird a bit.In my camera bag
I have the previously mentioned cannon eos 80d camera with a few lenses. I tend to use the 50mm as it as a good aperture range and makes me work to get good composition. I have to walk around a lot to frame a picture but seem to get good results. I also have an ultra wide lense if I'm in a towm or city to get a good view of a room or building. If its darker or night time I have a speedlight flash and I sometimes use a 90mm macro lense, this tends to work well if there are lots of flowers around.Feedback
I think its all about being aware of your suroundings and taking advantage of any opportunities that come up. Lots of practie helps so that when something presents yourself you are ready to spring into action and take that shot!
