Blue-eyed sadhu

In India in the holi city of Varanasi, the sadhus (the beggar saints to the god Shiva) are a great multitude. Especially during religious festival they gather and camp in sacred places along the Ganges. Among colors that come from every part of India and the rest of world, it is said that they also hide sadhu that pending account with the law. This is not the case with the young dutch sadhu with blue eyes and light and reminded me of some portrait of Flemish painting. Many young people from all over the world decide to leave everything for a long time and reach India to follow the spiritual life of Hinduism and live on alms. Two months after taking this photograph, with great surprise, I met him and his travel friend again in the city of Pokhara in Nepal. Like any sadhu coming from the Indian continente and heading to the to the temple of Multhinath in the Mustang in the Nepalese Himalaya that walks barefoot along the only track that reaches Jomosom continuing to the temple at 3,700m above sea level.
The journey for these men has always been considered a means of spiritual growth, as if moving the body would help to elevate the soul. In India it is said that sadhus must be like water: move continuously otherwise they will stagnate.

Nella città santa di Varanasi i sadhu, i santi mendicanti fedeli al dio shiva, sono una moltitudine. Soprattutto durante i festival religiosi si radunano nelle città sante lungo il fiume Gange. Tra coloro che provengono da ogni parte dell'India e del mondo, a volte, si nascondo anche falsi sadhu che hanno conti in sospeso con la giustizia. Non è il caso di questo giovane sadhu olandese dagli occhi blu e dai capelli color rubino. Ho scattato questo primissimo piano perché il suo viso mi ricordava vagamente alcuni ritratti della pittura fiamminga. Molti stranieri occidentali spesso decidono di mollare tutto e raggiungere l'India per seguire la via spirituale dettata dall'induismo. Due mesi dopo aver scattato questa fotografia, con grande stupore, ho incontrato lui e la sua compagna nella città di Pokhatra in Nepal, diretto al tempio indù di Mukthinath nella valle del Mustang nella transhimalaya nepalese. I veri fedeli si incamminano scalzi e raggiungono il tempio a 3700 metri d'altitudine. Il viaggio, per quest'uomini è sempre stato considerato un mezzo di crescita spirituale, come se muovere il corpo contribuisse a elevare l'anima. In India si dice dei sadhu che debbano essere come l'acqua: muoversi in continuazione, altrimenti ristagnano
