Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in several kilometers long beach area between settlements Gradac and Brist on Makarska Riviera, Croatia. Streak of trees and different vegetation just behind rocky and gravel beaches is typical for this area.

Time

This was taken at harshest part of midday, and the same shade beach visitors use as protection against really heavy sun was used for partial light softening.

Lighting

The part of the brightest area is very near to highlights peak and there are few spots here and there that are actually blown. This is intentional as no human eye can peep toward so harsh sun, ever through the branches and leafs, without being at least partially blinded. Fully preserving the highlights could possibly bring more appealing colour to the part of the sky, but would turn the scene into something that never ever exists in reality in this area, and would also degrade dramatic constant between bright and dark areas.

Equipment

Shot with Nikon D3500, with 18-55 lens.

Inspiration

I have desire to present beauty and atmosphere of this area over different times of day, via both details and wide captures.

Editing

I took most of images either in flat of neutral camera profile, but mostly start with flat, than spend considerable amount of time in balancing between details preservation and contrast regain. Here contrast was brought back partialy via camera profile, than via constant slider and via tone curve, each of these tools adding a bit of contrast in different way. White balance is preserved as selected by camera as I was satisfied with cast in both highlights and shades. Colours are just slightly boosted and few additional colour variations, mostly subtractions, are done via selective HSL panel, to bring it to what I remember to be seeing at that moment.

In my camera bag

I have very light APS-C system, so often I'm able to bring general purpose, wide and telephoto lens, and even few primes, all that within pretty light backpack or even shoulder bag.

Feedback

This particular image involves pressingly high dynamic range, so whoever wants to capture something similar should have idea on how to deal with dynamic range in advance. Use of flat profile as a base for postprocessing planning, taking shots with several exposure variations should be first steps.
