Location
We had spent the day hiking through the Redwood Forest and decided to stop on the way back to home-base at a beach. I had heard good things about College Cove so we headed that direction and I ended up capturing this photo around Houda Point Beach, Trinidad California. It was a bit of a challenge to find the right composition as the tide was coming in and making it difficult to navigate the sunken areas and the large rocks running along the beach. Once I had my tripod and camera set up I waited for the right moment. As the sky exploded with color a weary traveler made his way up the rocks to stare off into the sunset as a small bird sat watching from the rocks above. This is that moment in time memorialized for eternity.Time
After the long day of hiking, my feet and back didn't really wanted to R&R on the beach. After about an hour or so of resting I headed off for round two, determined to find a great beach shot. After an hour of exploring the area I settled on this location just before sunset. This photo was taken in early January 2019 around sunset . After a mostly cloudy and overcast day, I was fortunate enough to be gifted a beautiful sunset.Lighting
It was a mostly cloudy and overcast day and that carried into sunset for the most part. Not always ideal but this time I was fortunate. We take what we are given in landscape photography.Equipment
I used my Really Right Stuff tripod, Sony A7RIII camera and Sony FE 70-200mm f4 lens.Inspiration
I had an amazing day hiking through the Redwood Forest capturing images of trees taller than I could have imagined. After a long day, relaxing at the beach was the perfect ending. The northwest coast is beyond words beautiful. After such an inspiring day I wanted to capture that beauty around me.Editing
I shoot in RAW so post-processing was definitely involved. I used Lightroom to post-process this image. In my camera bag

It's really hard with landscape photography. The best advice I could give is to start by figuring out if you will be shooting at sunset or sunrise. Once you have that figured out you can find a location and composition that work with your previous choice. The third thing you should consider is the season that will be best for the image you want to capture. After you have all these aspects figured out, you will still be at the mercy of the weather. You'll want to plan to be at your location in the right season and preferably with favorable weather predictions. Patience is a skill that is required for landscape photographers and even then you will also need to love being in that moment. So even if the image you wanted never appears you will be satisfied with the experience you received.
