Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shot in Armenia, Khor Virap monastery.

Time

This picture was taken in October 2013.

Lighting

It was a hot sunny day. I was searching for a comfortable position inside the shadow area. Unfortunately, it was too little time for shooting. So, I decided to take a photo right in front of the Holy Mother of God church's entrance. Here we met with the hero of the picture.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D200 DSLR and Tamron 17-50 f2.8 lens.

Inspiration

This trip and photographing were inspired mainly by personality of Eduard Tevosov, whom I knew in person. Till 1989 Eduard had been living in Baku, where he and his photo club "Khazar" photographed in Nagorno-Karabagh republic and other Transcaucasia regions. I really enjoyed his portraits of mountaineers, photographed 30-40 years ago. After that I got interested in visiting the same places. So, in 2013 I visited Armenia for the first time. Man in the photo is Manvel. He is a spare hand worker in the monastery of Khor Virap. I met Manvel on a walk through the monastery. I was interested in his bright appearance and I asked Manvel to pose a little. He left his business for a few minutes and agreed to be photographed. Actually, I was hoping for a dialogue and more emotional shots. But Manvel is photographed by a lot of people and my request did not surprise him. He looked at the camera calmly and attentively, as if he was taking a passport photo. I made 5 or 6 frames. And deciding not to distract Manvel anymore, I thanked him for the pictures. A year or two after the shooting, I came back to the Khor Virap and gave Manvel the print of that image. You can't imagine his reaction! He was very happy and surprised. Probably not everyone who took pictures of him then gave him photos.

Editing

I achromatized the photograph, then pressed tonal correlations and added a bit of contour sharpening.

In my camera bag

Now I have Nikon D600 and a bunch of lenses. These are usually Nikon 35-105 mm, 24 mm and Tamron 70-200 mm. Sometimes I take a tripod Manfrotto befree, a set of filters Cokin and a remote control with me.

Feedback

In my opinion, it is especially important to be friendly and sincere with people, whom you are photographing. Quite often interesting images can appear during conversation.
