Behind The Lens

Location

South London in my front room converted into a studio. Blacked out the windows with black film to make sure there was no ambient light. My kitchen was for the make up artist and bedroom for changing room for the model, everything was improvised!

Time

We started around 13:00 hrs and finished around 16:00 hrs. Because we used black out film, it didn't matter what the ambient light was doing, this was my first time using black out film.

Lighting

I only used one spot light with a snoot, speedlight with a velcrose snoot. Cant believe this was just one light, but it was!

Equipment

Canon 6d Mark 2. Canon speedlight. 70-200 canon L Range lens IS. Manfrotto carbon tripod. Fairly cheap backdrop from Amazon.

Inspiration

I got it into my head to photograph a circus clown. Didn't want to create a scary clown so set about looking for costume, wig, make up ideas and a friend who could model for me.

Editing

Minimum post processing. Just a touch of lightening the shadows, and putting some details in the white ruff.

In my camera bag

Canon 6 D mark 2. Canon 70-200mm L range IS. Sigma 50 mm Art lens. Canon 19 - 40 mm L range.

Feedback

Just go for it. Take the next step in faith, you dont need to see the whole staircase. Just start, buy the costume, search for make up ideas on the internet, ask around for a model (i met someone in a coffee whose girlfriends sister was interested in modelling. Order the backdrop and give it a go. shop
