Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my home. My wife and I were blessed with a baby daughter in Sept 2019. We wanted to capture the happiness we experienced. Most of all we wanted to freeze the moment and make a forever memory of how tiny this new bundle of joy was. So one evening as my wife was rocking our daughter to sleep we captured this moment.

Time

Babies and toddlers move so much that it is difficult to capture a scene like this. So we waited till our daughter was almost asleep and took this photo at around 7.00 PM.

Lighting

As I knew it was indoors and light was going to be insufficient, using a speed-light was an obvious choice. To keep this photo simple and free of clutter we used a black cloth and placed on the lap while the mother rocked the baby to sleep. This became the background for a well illuminated photo of the hand and foot.

Equipment

This was shot using a Nikon D750 and 35mm f/1.4 lens. Since this was done indoor I used SB700 speed light.

Inspiration

It was incredible to watch how fast babies grow up and how fleeting the moments are when they are small. I wanted to freeze the moment to remember how tiny our new born baby is and how big our joy was.

Editing

Post processing included cropping to a tighter frame and desaturating the colors to make this a black and white photo as it would be more impactful than a color photo.

In my camera bag

My Nikon D750 is always with me accompanied by a few set of lenses. 35mm f/1.4 is always my choice for indoor and close range photography. 50mm f/1.4 for outdoor portraits. My primary passion is nature and birds photography. So I always carry a 200-500mm f/5.6 with me.

Feedback

For baby photography plan your session ahead of time. Keep note of baby’s sleep patterns. Pre-plan your background and lighting by practicing on other non-moving subjects.
