Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on Cannon Beach on the coast of Oregon. Views of the spectacular sunset and the water soaked beach created a near perfect mirror effect between sky and land. This is a composite photo of my wife and I using two different photos, one of each of us and stacked to make it look like we are walking together.

Time

The wind was blowing pretty hard this autumn afternoon along the beach making it hard to walk down the water soaked beach. The clouds cleared enough to let the setting sun through and provide a beautiful sunset. The water soaked beach created a really nice mirror effect on the sand.

Lighting

The clouds had cleared to let the setting sun shine down on the water soaked sand creating a spectacular mirror effect in the sand. The beach was nearly empty making it easy to capture the landscape without any people in the background.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 5d Mark II using a Canon 17-40mm f/4L lens.

Inspiration

My wife and I were driving along the coast of Oregon late in a November afternoon and noticed the sun was beginning to break through the clouds just as we were making our way through Cannon Beach so we stopped and just ended up spending the rest of the day until the sun set wandering around on Cannon Beach. The clouds and sun were creating a beautiful sunset and the waves were soaking the sand creating a mirror like effect between ground and sky that we couldn’t pass up.

Editing

This photo is a stacked image using two different photos. My wife and I weren’t able to use a tripod because the wind was blowing hard enough to make it difficult to use. We each took turns walking down the beach towards the water while the other took photos. We chose two photos that we would easily be able to stack to make it look like we were both in the photo together walking down the beach. We used Photoshop to stack the photos together.

In my camera bag

I don’t normally travel lightly with all my camera gear! I always travel with my Canon 5d Mark II and a Sony Alpha a6000. My go to lenses for my Canon are mostly wide angles including a Canon 17-40mm f/4L and a Rokinon 14mm f/2.8. I recently purchased a Canon 75-300mm f/4 lens and have been experimenting with closer landscapes. I usually travel with my Manfrotto Compact MKC3-H01 tripod as it’s a great, lightweight tripod that easily fits in a small suitcase.

Feedback

The best advice I can provide on shooting at Cannon Beach is to be aware of the weather and plan ahead. The weather can change drastically very quickly here so patience is key. Don’t be afraid of going in the winter or fall, the beach is a lot less busy which provides you more room to and vantage points.
