Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the beach of Hirtshals, Denmark, where I currently live. Without a car, I often drive with a bicycle. Beach is close by and one of the darkest areas for night photography here.

Time

Ahh, this image... I was taking photos of a first lunar eclipse of 2020. Excited, I spent a good hour doing so. When the effect started fading away, I was getting ready to go home. And by chance, I went a few steps between the sand dunes to get a different perspective of the moon. That is when I saw this view that I captured in the photo.

Lighting

Full moon naturaly illuminated the beach. Being the beginning of the night, a few hours after the sun has set, horizon above the sea still had light over it.

Equipment

Sony A7III camera. Sigma 14mm f/1.8 dg hsm art lens. And a decent tripod.

Inspiration

The first lunar eclipse of the year. Before this night I had made one decent photo of the moon, though it was flat and uninspiring. I was determined to make a better photo this time.

Editing

I am still relatively new to the whole photography thing. In other words, I keep learning something new every time I take photos and work with them. For better quality of post-processing, I shoot in RAW format. Then I edit or fix my photos on a computer, using Luminar 4 instead of Photoshop. I find the interface easy to use, with a lot of options. Though in the future I may change software.

In my camera bag

For special outdoor photography trips I have camera, 4 lenses, a few lens filters, a flashlight, an extra battery, a few extra memory cards, some cleaning cloth, a micro usb/usb cable for camera. And then some extra things like gloves, a bag, thermos, a snack. Most importantly, a snack.

Feedback

Go out, explore and be aware of your surroundings. After you have taken pictures of your main subject, try different angles. And keep an open eye for something special. Then take a hundred photos and keep one :D
