Behind The Lens

Location

I found this bumblebee taking a drink while looking for flowers to photograph at the campsite I was staying at in Oceano, CA.

Time

It was just before lunch time and I was walking around taking pictures of the blooming flowers. I didn't notice the bumble bee until I had taken several pictures to the flowers on the bush. Just happened to be at the right place at the right time. The photo was taken at 11:30am on October 26, 2019.

Lighting

I was worried the photo wouldn't turn out due to the lighting with it being full sun with shadows moving as the wind moved the plant.

Equipment

This was shot with my Nikon 3400 using my 70-300mm f 4.5-6.3 lens.

Inspiration

I was taking advantage of all the flowers in bloom around me. Having another subject with the flowers can make the picture more interesting. This big bee was happy to be my model for several minutes.

Editing

I used lightroom to crop the image tighter around the subject.

In my camera bag

When I'm traveling I like to only carry 2-3 lens in my bag. I hate carrying a heavy bag. Knowing I was going to the beach, this trip I took both my 70-300mm f 4.5-6.3 lens and my 18-55mm f 3.5-5.6 so I could take pictures of my kids and the landscape. I often carry my Yongnuo 50mm prime lens also.

Always take your time and explore the area you are photographing to make sure you don't miss any hidden opportunities.
