Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my homestudio in Hillegem, Belgium.

Time

I started this project in the morning. The fish was the first dish of 4 I made.

Lighting

I wanted perfect lighting on the dish. So I decided to take the picture in my photo studio with 2 flashes. It also helped me to freeze the bug on the fish. A fly had to land on the wright spot on the fish. It took a lot of patience and luck before it happend.

Equipment

It was taken with my Nikon D800. And a simple lens, Nikkon AF 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6 I also used a tripod and 2 softboxes.

Inspiration

Lately I read a lot about the pollution in the ocean and saw a lot of photos of fishes with plastic in their bodies. So my creative mind started to work. When fish eat plastic... also we eat plastic. I started to make dishes with plastic that looked delicious.

Editing

The result had to be realistic but with a twist of unrealeality. So I decided to edit the contrast and saturation.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon D800 in my bag. Because I also like architecture, I can easily use this fullframe for that kind of photography. I have always my kitlens Nikkor AF 50mm F1.8 D in my bag. They are cheap, but still do the job very well. It's light-weight and very sharp. And offcours a lot of memory cards.

Feedback

You have to open your mind and think out of the box. When you have an idea... Go for it! Think carefully and work out your idea on paper, prepare well so that from the moment you start making the shoot, you immediately know how you are going to do it. It will save you time. When you are making the picture, ideas will come up and you still can experiment, with lightning, angle... Always check on a pc, laptop screen... during the shoot. You will have a better idea of the picture then on the display of your camera.
