Heritage Transport Museum

The Wirral Heritage Tramway operates two Hong Kong trams specially built for the tramway in 1992. The run from Woodside Ferry through the historic Birkenhead dock gates passing the Pump House and the Cheshire Lines building, then pass Pacific Road before running alongside Wirral Metropolitan College, Five Quays and Egerton Bascule Bridge with magnificent views of Liverpool Waterfront.
The tramway then terminates outside the Wirral Transport Museum with its fine collection of Historic Trams, buses and other vehicles, some of which are undergoing restoration.
The transport collection was created as a celebration of Birkenhead’s place in the history of public transport and set up in collaboration with the volunteers of the Merseyside Tramway Preservation Society, who restore old trams. The museum is run by very helpful voluntary staff, who can provide much information about the exhibits. This is one of the most comprehensive ‘working’ transport museums in the country.
The museum has had its share of famous visitors popping in over the past few years including Liverpool’s own Ken Dodd. More recently Michael Portillo has visited the Museum and Tramway, while filming for his BBC series ‘The Great British Journeys’.
Trams operate every weekend, school holidays and bank holidays. Extra trams operate on special event days such as Santa Specials and the annual Wirral Bus and Tram show which is held on the first Sunday in October.
